This ain’t good.
The colorful tropical earwig I posted weeks ago has been reblogged hundreds of times all the sudden, with a number of people expressing surprise that there are winged earwigs at all.
As a matter of fact, even your own common local earwigs have these gorgeous little angel wings…they just barely ever use them, and are VERY rarely witnessed flying by human eyes. The wings fold up at nearly a hundred points to fit under the tiny elytra, which makes it difficult for them to unfold on their own; the insect actually has to use its cerci (the “pincers” on its tail) to reach up and pull its own wings open!
The earwig’s super compact wings mean it can fly when it really needs to, but can also slip into tight little spaces to escape predators. Most other insects have had to evolve only one or the other.
Here’s a cool diagram for a clearer view, which also shows you how to tell males from females, which is pretty easy!
You can learn lots of weird stuff about insects on my site, too.
Earwigs are so cool. Not too long ago I had two specimens, and I picked one for my collection and with the other, I tried to unfold its wings with some tweezers. I ripped one and the other I was too afraid to touch.
